You made dinner. You answered the texts. You showed up for everyone. And you still feel like a stranger in your own body. That is what high functioning burnout does. It hides inside a competent looking life.
If a friend was watching you from across the kitchen this week, she would say you are doing great. She would mean it. The kids look fed. The calendar is being kept. The smile arrives on time when somebody asks how you are.
She would be looking at the wrong person.
Because the version of you that does the dinner and the texts and the smile is not the version of you who lives in there. That one is somewhere quieter. That one has been quieter for a while. High functioning burnout is what happens when you keep performing the role of yourself long after you stopped feeling like her. ðŸ«
This post is for the mom who looks fine. The one who is not in crisis. The one who is showing up to everything and disappearing inside everything she shows up to. We are going to name what is happening, why it hides for so long, and the very small thing that starts to bring you back.
What High Functioning Burnout Actually Is
Regular burnout is the version everyone recognises. The mom in pyjamas at three in the afternoon. The crying in the cereal aisle. The cannot get out of bed.
High functioning burnout is the same fire, with better camouflage.
You are not collapsed on the floor. You are at school pickup, on time, with the snack. The collapse is happening on the inside while the outside keeps walking.
It is the burnout of the woman who cannot afford to fall apart. The mom of the small child. The boss with people under her. The wife of the partner who is also tired. The one who is the glue, and knows what happens to a kitchen if you take the glue out, so she stays glued.
So she keeps doing the things. And while she is doing them, something inside her quietly leaves the room.
That leaving is the burnout. Not the dropped ball. Not the breakdown. The small steady evacuation of the woman behind the eyes.
I lived inside this for years and called it being responsible. Called it being capable. Called it being the one who could be counted on. None of those words were lies. They were just the wrapping paper on a body that was running on empty.

The Performance You Do Not Even Know You Are Putting On
Here is the strange part. You are not faking. You are performing. Those are different things.
Faking means knowing you are pretending. Performing means the role has been on for so long you forgot it was a role.
You answer I am fine and you mean it, in a way. You are upright. You are not bleeding. You are functionally fine.
You just have not asked yourself if you are anything else.
I went years saying I was tired and meaning it without ever stopping to ask what kind. Sleep tired. Soul tired. Whole life tired. Nobody had ever taught me to look closer. So I just kept handing out the word tired like a single coin that was supposed to cover everything.
The performance gets very polished. You learn the smile that closes the conversation before anyone digs. You learn the yeah I know that means please do not give me one more thing. You learn to turn down the offer of help because the help would take longer to explain than to just do it yourself.
That is high functioning burnout in a sentence. You stopped letting anyone in close enough to notice the stranger living in your body.
Why Nobody Believes You When You Say You Are Fine, And You Believe Yourself
The people in your life do not believe you when you say you are fine. They believe what they see. And what they see is a mom who is fine.
This is not their fault. The signal you are sending is the signal they are receiving.
The trickier part is that you also believe yourself. Because the mornings happened. The lunches got made. The car got driven. By every measurable standard you are coping.
Coping and being okay are not the same thing.
A high functioning burned out mom can keep coping for a really long time. That is the whole problem. The system that is built to alert you that you are running out of capacity has been muffled by years of pushing through. So the alarm is going off, but very quietly, in a closet, behind a coat.
You walk past the closet. You make dinner.
If you have ever been told you have so much on your plate, how do you do it all, and felt a tiny flicker of something between pride and panic, that flicker is the part of you trying to send up a flare. She knows. She just is not getting picked up.
She is not asking for a parade. She is asking for someone to notice that the lights are on but the lady of the house has been gone for a while.

The Mirror Moment That Gives It Away
Most high functioning burned out moms have a mirror moment. The day they catch themselves and the catch goes deeper than usual.
Mine was at the dinner table on an ordinary Tuesday. Nothing dramatic. No fight, no meltdown, just a normal evening.
My boyfriend came up behind me and rested his hand on my shoulder. The kind of small loving hand a partner puts there a hundred times a year.
I pulled away before I knew I was doing it.
We both froze. Neither of us said anything. But something in me already had.
That was the moment I understood I had not been a person in my own body for a very long time. I had been a function. A schedule. A pair of hands that did the dishes and then went to bed.
The mirror moment is not the breaking. The mirror moment is the seeing. You cannot un see it once it lands.
For some moms the mirror is a flinch. For some it is a song that makes them cry in the car for no reason. For some it is the day they pick up a hobby they used to love and feel absolutely nothing.
The mirror is a mercy. It is the part of you who has been quiet for years finally tapping you on the shoulder and saying hi, I am still here, please come find me.
The Way Joy Starts Going Quiet
Joy is loud when the tank is full. It is the laugh from the gut when the toddler says something absurd. It is the song in the car at red volume. It is the moment of yes I am alive.
When high functioning burnout sets in, joy does not vanish all at once. It just thins.
The toddler is still funny. You smile. The smile does not reach your chest.
The song still plays. You hum. The hum is the right notes in the wrong colour.
You are still going through the motions of pleasure. You just stopped receiving it.
That is one of the loudest signs and the one we explain away the fastest.
I told myself for a long time that I was just past the stage of life where things felt as bright. Like I had outgrown my own joy. Which is, in retrospect, one of the saddest sentences I have ever told myself.
You did not outgrow joy. Joy did not stop knocking. Your house just stopped opening the door because the woman who lives there is busy holding the ceiling up.
If your favourite things have started to feel like a screensaver of your favourite things, that is not maturity. That is the tank.
If you are quietly snapping more underneath all that, you might also recognise yourself in how to stop being the angry mom and finally feel like yourself again. The two things often live in the same house.

Why High Functioning Burnout Hides For So Long
Capable women hide best. That is the whole sentence.
The world rewards the performance. People praise you for being on top of it. Other moms ask you how you do it all. Your boss leans on you. Your kids assume the seamless schedule is just how things are.
So the cost of falling apart goes up every year. The role keeps being reinforced from the outside. Of course I am fine. Look at how fine I am.
There is no incentive to stop performing until something inside you refuses.
That refusal is what brings most of us in. The flinch. The flat. The I cannot answer one more text right now. The day you sit in your car in the school parking lot and cannot remember what comes next.
Those are not breakdowns. Those are bargains expiring.
The other reason it hides is that it does not look like the burnout in the articles. The articles show pyjamas and tears. High functioning burnout looks like a clean kitchen and a calendar full of well placed reminders. So you keep googling and reading and thinking that is not me, while you are very much it. Just dressed differently.
If your life looks together and your insides do not, you are not crazy and you are not exaggerating. You are the kind of burned out that hides. And the hiding is the part that keeps it going. 🌙
The First Small Thing That Brings You Back To Your Body
You do not heal high functioning burnout by adding a fifth job to your list called self care.
You heal it by coming back to your body, two minutes at a time.
Burnout lives in the head and the schedule. The way out is through the body. Not because the body is the seat of all wisdom and your brain is a fool, but because the body is the only part of you that has not been performing. It is still telling the truth.
You can come back to yourself in two minutes if the two minutes are honest.
Sit. Feel the chair under you. Notice your shoulders. Let one slow breath do the work of the next sentence in your head. That is not a wellness routine. That is a hand reaching back into your own body and saying hey. I am here. I came back.
When I started this it felt almost stupid. Two minutes? With everything I am holding? Surely the answer has to be bigger than that.
The answer is not bigger. The answer is honest, and small, and repeated. It is what the 2 Minute Body Reset is built around, because that is the size of moment a high functioning burned out mom can actually take. Not a retreat. Not a system. A door back into your own skin.
You do not have to overhaul your life this week. You only have to be in your body for two minutes today. That is the door.
You Are Not Lost. You Are Quiet.
If you found yourself in this post, you are not falling apart. You are finally being honest about the shape of things. That is not the breaking. That is the brave part.
High functioning burnout is the burnout of the capable woman, and the capable woman is the one who keeps going long after the lights have gone dim inside. She is doing it for love. She is doing it because she does not know how to stop. She is doing it because nobody asked her to.
You are allowed to ask yourself to stop now.
The way back is not loud. It is two minutes in your own body, and another two tomorrow, and an honest sentence to one person, and a no that is just a no. A small bowl of yourself, refilled by you, while the kettle is on.
Try a 2 Minute Body Reset tonight, after the kids are down, in the quietest corner you can find. Not to fix everything. Just to come back into the room.
You are still in there. You always were. 💛

I am all of this! I am fine. Am I? Not really. I am not certain right now if the 2 minute reset will work, but I am definitely ready to give it a try.
