It is 21:14. The house is quiet for the first time in fourteen hours. The dishwasher hum is the loudest thing in the room. The kids are finally asleep. You should be melting into the couch like a small content puddle.

You are not melting. You are vibrating.

You can’t relax even when the kids are finally in bed and you cannot for the life of you figure out why. The thing you have been waiting for all day, the silence, the stillness, the unclaimed body, is here. And your body did not get the memo. You are still on.

So you sit. You scroll. You open the fridge. You close the fridge. You start a show you will not remember tomorrow. You drink wine you do not actually want. Nothing works. By 22:30 you give up and lie in bed wide awake, brain humming, body buzzing, exhausted and absolutely not sleepy.

If this is you, you are not bad at resting. You are not bad at anything. Your nervous system has been running on emergency mode since 6:47 a.m. and it has not been told the emergency is over.

In this post I will explain why this happens, what is actually going on inside your body, why the usual coping moves do not work, and the small, embarrassingly simple shift that finally helped me come down at night. 💛

Why You Can’t Relax Even When The House Is Quiet

A whole day with small humans is not just busy. It is nervous system labour. You spent the day scanning, anticipating, mediating, soothing, and producing solutions on demand. Your body has been in a low grade fight or flight state since you opened your eyes.

Then the kids go to bed and the input stops. But your body does not know that. It does not have an off switch wired to the nursery door.

This is why you can’t relax when the kids are in bed even though, logically, this is exactly when you should be able to. Your body is still scanning for the next thing. The next noise. The next bedroom door. The next MAMA.

Your prefrontal cortex knows the day is over. Your nervous system is six steps behind, still on the floor with the duplo.

This is not a failure of self care. You did not forget to light a candle. It is the lag between adrenaline going up and adrenaline coming down. And the lag is a real, measurable thing. Cortisol does not clear in twenty minutes just because the kids stopped yelling.

It clears slowly. Sometimes hours. Sometimes not until you sleep, if you can sleep, which most of us cannot.

The Nervous System That Will Not Shut Off

There are five basic states your nervous system can be in. The one you are probably stuck in right now is sympathetic activation. On guard. The one you want to be in by 21:00 is parasympathetic. Rest. Digest. Repair.

You cannot think your way from one to the other. You cannot meditate your way there if your body has not been told it is safe yet.

Your body needs evidence. Concrete physical signals that the threat is over. Heart rate slowing. Breath lengthening. Muscles unclenching. Shoulders dropping a centimetre. None of this is mystical. This is just biology.

The reason scrolling does not do it is because scrolling is still stimulation. The reason wine does not do it is because wine numbs but does not regulate. The reason the show does not do it is because the show is more input on top of an already saturated input system.

You are trying to add something to a body that needs to remove something. You need to subtract input, not add it.

I wish someone had told me this nine years ago. It would have saved me a lot of bad evenings.

The Moment I Pulled Away At The Dinner Table

I want to tell you the moment I realised my body was completely fried. It was nothing dramatic.

It was a Tuesday. Dinner was finished. The kids were doing something somewhere. My boyfriend came up behind me and put his hand on my shoulder. Just his hand. Not anything else. The most ordinary, gentle thing.

I pulled away before I even knew I was doing it.

We both froze. He looked at me. I looked at him. And I felt something cold drop in my stomach, because I had just flinched away from the person I love. Not because of him. Because my body did not have one more drop left to give.

That was the moment I understood that I was not just tired. I was empty. The kind of empty where even a kind touch feels like one more demand.

If you have ever flinched at being touched after a long day with kids, you are not broken. You are over capacity. Your body is protecting what is left.

There is a name for it. It is called being touched out. And it lives in the same hyper activated nervous system that will not let you relax at night.

Hypervigilance Is Not A Personality Trait

You are not naturally a worrier. You are not just an anxious person. You probably were not always like this. Most of us were not.

You are hypervigilant because you have been the safety officer for tiny humans for years. Your job is to notice everything before it becomes a problem. Before the toddler falls. Before the eldest melts down. Before the dog eats the lego.

That job rewires you. It is supposed to. The rewiring is the whole reason you are good at your job. It is also the reason you cannot relax at night, because the part of your brain that runs the noticing does not have an off button you can press from the couch.

You cannot tell hypervigilance just relax. It does not respond to commands. It responds to safety signals.

This is also why the partner who sleeps two minutes after head hits pillow makes you want to flip the bed. He is not better at sleeping. He has not been on duty. That difference is the entire gap.

You are not broken. You are trained. And the training is doing exactly what it was designed to do, which is keep your kids alive. Now you need to retrain the system to also let you rest.

Why Wine, Numbing, And Scrolling Is Not Rest

A short, honest list of the things most of us reach for at 21:30 that are not actually rest:

  • Two glasses of wine
  • TikTok for forty minutes
  • The fridge, three times, not because we are hungry
  • The third episode of something we will not remember
  • Online shopping for things we do not need
  • Lying in bed while also checking the school app
  • Doom scrolling the news because somehow that is calming?

These are all forms of numbing. Numbing is not rest. Numbing is what we do when we do not yet have permission to actually let down.

Numbing keeps you in the same activated state. It just puts a soft filter on it. Then you wake up at 7 a.m. still tired, because nothing in your body actually got to repair.

Real rest looks different. It is quieter. It is sometimes boring. It is your body doing the slow chemical work of unclenching. It is not stimulating. That is the whole point.

I am not telling you to give up the wine. I am telling you it is not the wine that is helping. You are not relaxing yet. You are just dulling the not relaxing.

What Your Body Is Actually Trying To Do

When you can’t relax, your body is not malfunctioning. Your body is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. It is holding you ready in case you are needed again.

That readiness is a love letter from your nervous system to your kids. It just got stuck in the on position because you have been needed too many times in a row.

So when you find yourself wired at 22:00, instead of fighting it, you can try to thank it. Out loud if you want. I know you have me. I know you are on watch. We are off duty now.

This sounds woo. It is not woo. It is your conscious mind sending the message your unconscious has been waiting for all day, which is: the threat is over, you can stand down.

You may need to say it more than once. You may need to say it for weeks. Your body has been on duty for a long time. It will believe you eventually.

If you have not yet read my post on the kind of boundaries that protect your evenings from being someone else’s emergency, that is the next layer of this same conversation.

Tiny Resets That Actually Work

These are not a routine. They are not a system. You do not have to do all of them. You do not have to do any of them every night. Pick one. Try it for a week. See what your body does.

A short list of things that actually move you toward rest:

  • Stand outside for two minutes in the dark and just breathe slowly. Bare feet if you can.
  • Put a heavy blanket on your lap and let yourself feel weight.
  • A long, slow exhale, longer than your inhale, ten times.
  • A hot drink in your hands while sitting in dim light. No screen.
  • Stretch your jaw. Yes really. Your jaw is holding a day’s worth of unsaid things.
  • Wash your face with cold water. The shock cue tells your vagus nerve it is safe.

You are looking for one body level signal that the day is over. Just one. Your body needs evidence, not affirmations.

The one that finally cracked it for me was the cold water. The first time I tried it I cried over the bathroom sink. That is how badly my body had been waiting to be told it could rest.

If you want the exact two minute body reset I now use most nights, it is here. The 2 Minute Body Reset is the smallest, simplest thing I have ever made, and it is the thing that finally got me out of the wired tired loop most evenings. It is free. It is fast. It is the version of this post your body actually needs.

You Are Not Broken You Are Activated

I want to say this clearly, because moms internalise everything as a personal failure and this one is not yours to carry alone.

You can’t relax because your nervous system has been doing the hardest job in your life with no breaks. You are not lazy. You are not bad at rest. You are not failing self care. You are simply still on, in a body that has not been told it is allowed to be off.

That is fixable. Not in a take a hot bath and a hot girl walk way. In a slow, body level, daily way. By giving your nervous system small repeated signals that it is safe to come down.

You will not get it perfect. Some nights you will still scroll. Some nights you will still pour the wine. That is fine. Progress is not perfect evenings. Progress is one evening where your body actually let go. Then another.

If you want more of this gentle real talk in your inbox, the rest of my writing on motherhood and the body lives on the blog.

The kids are in bed. The day is done. You are allowed to come back down now. Even if it takes your body a little while to believe it.

Try the 2 Minute Body Reset tonight. Just once. See what happens. Your nervous system has been waiting for you to tell it the truth: you are safe. You are off duty. You can rest now. 💛
