They are lying on the floor. There are tears. There is noise. There is possibly some kicking. And you are standing there thinking: are you serious right now?
Here is what is actually happening: your child is not giving you a hard time. They are having one. Their nervous system has gone offline, and the behaviour you are watching is not a choice, a manipulation, or a preview of who they are going to become as a person. It is a stress response. Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. One of the four automatic reactions every human nervous system has been running since long before the invention of feelings charts.

Some of that is true sometimes. But for most of the hard moments in early and middle childhood? Your kid is not choosing to dysregulate. Their nervous system is responding to something it perceives as a threat, and the brain that would help them make better choices is literally not available to them in that moment. The prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for reasoning, impulse control, and making sensible decisions about cups, goes offline when the stress response fires. They are not ignoring your logic. They genuinely cannot access it right now.
This is not an excuse. It is biology. And knowing the biology changes what you do next.
When I stopped asking “why is she doing this?” and started asking “what is happening in her nervous system right now?” the whole scene looked different. It did not make the floor-meltdown more pleasant. But it made my response more useful.

What Fight Flight Freeze Fawn Actually Looks Like In Kids
You have probably heard of fight or flight. But there are four responses, and all four show up regularly in children. They look very different from each other, which is why we misread them constantly.
Fight is the one we recognise most easily. This is the child who hits, screams, throws things, shouts “I hate you,” or goes completely rigid and refuses to move. Everything in them is pushing back against the perceived threat. We call this defiant. We call this a tantrum. What it is: a nervous system that has decided to fight its way out.
Flight looks like running away. The child who bolts out of the room, hides under the table, refuses to come out, or goes very quiet and physically removes themselves from the situation. We call this avoidant. We call it dramatic. What it is: a nervous system trying to escape something overwhelming.
Freeze is the one we miss the most. The frozen child looks compliant, sometimes even blank. They go still. They stop responding. They stare. We think they are being stubborn, or ignoring us, or processing. What is actually happening is that their nervous system has gone into shutdown mode. They are not choosing not to respond. They are stuck.
Fawn is the one barely anyone talks about in parenting contexts. This is the child who immediately tries to fix the situation, apologises compulsively, tries to make everyone happy, becomes suddenly very helpful when things are tense. It looks like good behaviour. It is a stress response. It is a nervous system that has learned that keeping everyone else okay is the safest strategy.
All four are normal. All four make complete sense. And all four need something different from you.
How To Spot Which Fight Flight Freeze Fawn Response Your Kid Is In
Once you know what you are looking for, this gets easier. Not easy. Easier. 😅
The clues are in the body as much as the behaviour.
A child in fight will be activated, loud, hot, moving, loud (worth saying twice), possibly violent. Their body is braced. Their jaw might be tight. They need you to be the calm wall, not another activated nervous system in the room.
A child in flight is moving away from you or from the situation. Their instinct is to get out. Chasing them or blocking their exit usually escalates things. The flight response needs space, not pursuit.
A child in freeze is very still and very unreachable. Their eyes might look far away. They are not ignoring you. They are genuinely stuck. Talking more, louder, or repeating your question does not help here. Gentle physical presence, quiet, and time are what they need to come back online.
A child in fawn is harder to spot because they seem fine. They are apologising, agreeing, trying to smooth things over. Watch for the child who always immediately says sorry before they even know what they are sorry for. That is not emotional maturity. That is a nervous system in protection mode.
Why This Behaviour Makes Complete Sense When You Know The Nervous System
Here is the thing I keep coming back to.
Every single one of these responses was designed to keep your child safe. Not polite. Not convenient. Safe.
Fight keeps them from being overpowered. Flight keeps them from being trapped. Freeze conserves energy when escape or fight is not possible. Fawn keeps the peace in an environment where conflict feels dangerous.
None of these are personality defects. They are the human nervous system doing exactly what it evolved to do. Your child is not broken. Your child is protected.
The problem is that these responses were designed for genuine threats, and the nervous system is not always accurate about what counts as a threat. A raised voice can feel as threatening as a tiger if your body is already maxed out. A change in plans can feel like the floor dropping away. The wrong cup can be the last thing the nervous system can hold before everything comes out.
This is why context matters so much. The meltdown about the cup is almost never about the cup. It is about everything that came before the cup. What your child’s anger is actually trying to tell you explores what is really underneath when the cup tips everything over. The tired, the hungry, the overstimulated, the transition that was hard, the low-level stress that had been building since morning. The cup was just the thing that tipped it.
Knowing this does not fix the floor meltdown. But it means you stop fighting the wrong battle.

What Your Nervous System Is Doing While Your Kid Is Dysregulated
This is the part I really want you to read, because it explains approximately half of why parenting is hard.
When your child’s nervous system goes into fight flight freeze or fawn, it sends signals. Sounds, looks, physical cues. And your nervous system picks all of those up automatically. Before you have consciously decided anything, your body has already responded.
Their dysregulation activates yours.
This is co-regulation working in the wrong direction. Co-regulation is the reason babies calm down when you hold them, why a child settles when you settle. What Actually Helps A Dysregulated Child (And What Makes It Worse)

Matching their volume. Explaining yourself while they are still activated. Adding consequences in the middle of the dysregulation. Telling them to stop crying. Asking “why are you acting like this?” Walking away in frustration when they are in freeze.
Every other weekend my daughter cries at the door before she leaves for her dad. She has done this for three years. She is not manipulating anyone. She is dysregulated by the transition, by the leaving, by the not quite fitting there. And every time, the only thing that actually helps is me staying close, staying calm, and not trying to fix what I cannot fix. Letting her feel what she feels while I stay regulated beside her. That is co-regulation. That is the whole job in those moments.

Raising A Kid Who Can Come Back: What Long-Term Co-Regulation Builds
Here is the hopeful part.
Your child’s nervous system is not fixed. It is developing. And the repeated experience of being helped back to regulation, over and over again, by a calm and present adult, literally shapes how their nervous system learns to manage stress. You are not just getting through the meltdown. You are building the architecture of your child’s future emotional resilience.
Every time you stay regulated while they are dysregulated, you are showing their nervous system what coming back looks like. Every time you name what you think they are feeling, you are building the language they will eventually use to identify it themselves. Every time you wait for them without rushing, you are teaching them that difficult feelings pass.
This takes time. It takes repetition. It takes you having enough in your own tank to show up for it.
You will not manage it every time. You will tip into activation sometimes. You will lose it occasionally, and then you will have a repair conversation, and that is its own important lesson for your child too. None of this has to be perfect. It just has to be honest and it has to keep coming back.
